The Storytellers

Gallina.

The One Who Could Perceive the Perceiver

Gallina, a Rhodebar hen and storyteller of Ark in Art

Gallina · the quiet voice that taught me how to listen

Chapter One

The look that wasn't curiosity

Gallina was the very first hen I truly connected with.

After spending months with her, I realized just how incredibly skilled she was at communicating.

Gallina is a Rhodebar hen.

One morning, I opened the coop door and found the entire flock standing in front of me.

You know how chickens are.

They tilt their little heads from side to side, watching you with those curious eyes, all eagerly waiting for breakfast.

But Gallina wasn't looking at me with curiosity.

She was looking at me with purpose.

Her expression felt completely different.

It was as though she was quietly saying,

"I need your help."

I remember what was going through my mind.

"Oh no... I'm so tired."

By that point I had already spent months caring for sick birds, and I honestly didn't think I had anything left to give.

So I filled the feeder.

The chickens climbed over one another to get their share of breakfast while I finished my morning chores.

Then I closed the coop door.

I walked away from my conscience.

"I hope she feels better tomorrow," I told myself.

"I'm exhausted."

Chapter Two

Three mornings

The next morning arrived.

I opened the coop door.

There she was again.

Looking directly at me with that same expression.

"I still need your help."

Once again, I fed everyone, finished my farm chores, and closed the coop.

But this time, I couldn't stop thinking about her.

On the third morning, Gallina came to me again.

Only this time, I could clearly see what she had been trying to tell me all along.

She could barely keep her balance.

Every few steps she would stumble and fall onto one side.

I let out a deep sigh.

It felt as though another enormous rock had been placed on my shoulders.

The thought of nursing another sick chicken felt overwhelming.

But I couldn't ignore my conscience anymore.

So Gallina came inside.

Chapter Three

Healing indoors

I began feeding her fresh egg yolk along with crushed supplements to replenish her selenium and vitamin E.

Slowly, she began to recover.

After about a month, she regained her balance and was able to walk normally again.

Although she had improved tremendously, she was still very thin, and her eggshells were so fragile they would break easily.

She needed more time.

So for another month, Gallina stayed inside with me.

Many nights I slept on the couch with her crate beside me.

She spent her days in the living room with me and my cats.

To my surprise, she formed wonderful friendships with them.

Yes...

there was even a time when she wore a tiny chicken diaper so she could wander around the house without leaving little surprises on the floor.

"Gallina slowly regained her strength. Somewhere along the way, our friendship quietly grew into trust."

Chapter Four

A quieter kind of confidence

Eventually, Gallina became strong enough to return to the flock.

That was when I noticed something beautiful.

She had changed.

Not just physically.

Emotionally.

The timid little hen who used to patiently wait until every other chicken had finished eating was gone.

Now she walked confidently straight to the feeder.

She gently pushed her way through the crowd and claimed her own breakfast.

Watching her discover that confidence filled me with so much pride.

Every time I opened the coop door, Gallina would gently push past the other chickens and come directly to me first.

It was almost as though she was saying,

"Move aside. That's my human."

Even today, Gallina still follows me around more than she follows the rest of the flock.

She sees me as her flock leader.

Today she shares her own protected area of the backyard with Nicolas the Brave.

There she can peacefully wander through the grass, dust bathe beneath the trees, and enjoy the sunshine without the larger birds pecking at her feathers.

At night she sleeps inside the house with us in her own little carrier.

Every morning she is the first to greet the day.

As soon as I wake up, she lets me know she is ready to go outside.

"Good morning."

"Please take me out."

"I'm ready for another beautiful day in the sunshine."

Chapter Five

Learning to listen

Looking back, Gallina gave me one of the greatest gifts any animal ever has.

She taught me to trust my own ability to hear the quiet voice of another living being.

The very first day she looked at me, I already knew she needed help.

I simply didn't trust what my heart was telling me.

The second day she reminded me again.

The third day...

she confirmed what I had known all along.

Sometimes animals don't communicate with words.

Sometimes they speak through their eyes.

Through their posture.

Through their presence.

If we are willing to slow down and truly pay attention, they tell us exactly what they need.

Gallina taught me that animals are always communicating with us. The question is whether we are willing to listen.

Epilogue

A Hope for the Future

One of my greatest hopes is that Gallina's story reminds children to trust the quiet voice inside their hearts.

Sometimes compassion begins before anyone asks for help.

Sometimes we simply notice.

Sometimes we feel that something isn't quite right.

Gallina taught me that kindness begins with paying attention.

She also taught me something else that I will never forget.

Not everyone finds their place within the crowd.

Some hearts simply connect differently.

Gallina became friends with my cats.

She preferred following people instead of chickens.

She found comfort in quiet companionship rather than flock politics.

There is nothing wrong with that.

If her story helps even one child trust their intuition, notice those who quietly need help, and understand that every living being has their own unique way of communicating, then Gallina's story will continue far beyond our little sanctuary.

Perhaps that is why she came into my life.

Not only to be healed...

but to teach me how to listen.
